Fun Facts about Stormwater

Volunteers

Looking for a fun, outdoor activity that can involve the whole family, lets the kids romp around and get rid of some of that extra energy, promotes science and learning, gets you back in touch with nature, and is great for the environment?  Volunteer!   Get your feet wet and your hands muddy.  There are lots of water quality programs and organizations that would love to have you join.  Or start your own volunteer group at school, with people from work, or with people in your community.  Look for additional opportunities geared specifically to children on the Kids page.   Also, don't forget to occasionally check the Calendar page for up-to-date local events.

Hoosier Riverwatch

Volunteers regularly collect information concerning the health of a stream or river's habitat, biology, and chemistry.  You can join an existing Riverwatch group or you can learn the procedures for yourself at one of the Riverwatch training workshops.   This program is suitable for all ages and you don't need to have previous knowledge or experience to participate.  If you are already a Riverwatch volunteer, you can ENTER YOUR DATA HERE.

Adopt

Volunteers search for rare, discarded treasures that have ended in and along the county's waterways.  If you are looking for a good set of bald tires, a scratch and dent refrigerator suitable for use as a planter, a bicycle whose chain needs some serious oiling, a water heater complete with water, or a slightly soggy recliner, this is the program for you.  Last year, Frankfort High School, in Clinton County, won the award for most trash collected by removing 16 TONS from Prairie Creek!  Click here for more information on this program.

ETThe Earth Team is a group of volunteers who assist the Tippecanoe County Soil and Water Conservation District with a wide range of tasks.  As a member of  the Earth Team, you'll be involved in conservation at the action level - helping farmers, ranchers, and other landowners reduce wind and water erosion, keep streams clear, conserve water, enhance wildlife habitat, and reduce upstream flooding. Anyone 14 years of age or older and interested in conserving our precious natural resources can join the Earth Team. You can work part-time or full-time, evenings or weekends, outdoors or in an local NRCS office. You can volunteer as an individual or as a group!  If you would like to volunteer, contact the Tippecanoe County SWCD at 765-474-9992, Ext. 3 or send an email

INDIANA CLEAN LAKES PROGRAM VOLUNTEER MONITORING

This program focuses on lake clarity as an indicator of the overall health of a lake.sun   Volunteer groups take secchi disk readings about once every two weeks during the monitoring season (May-September). Second year volunteers have the opportunity to begin water chemistry monitoring. The volunteers are trained to collect water samples that are analyzed by Indiana University for total phosphorus and chlorophyll A.  Volunteers who have been monitoring for one year or longer can be trained to use Dissolved Oxygen meters.  Data collected can be entered directly on the volunteer monitoring web site, e-mailed in, or mailed.  If you are already a volunteer monitor, you can ENTER YOUR DATA HERE.
